Condensation inside a shipping container occurs when the temperature inside drops below to dew point. The dew point is the temperature when the airborne water vapor will condense to form liquid water. When condensation forms on the interior of the container, the...

All States Containers storage containersSince the introduction of storage containers, the shipping industry has seen declines in transport costs.  These reductions were due to the efficiency of their handling, management, the reduction in shipping time, and the need for warehousing. Their simple design allows storage containers to be transported easily, be it by truck, rail or ships; giving storage containers a great versatility.

When talking about durability and longevity, steel storage containers excel due to the strength of the material. General purpose storage containers or “dry freight” containers are made out of steel and known to be very durable, but are they weatherproof?

Steel storage containers are made to be weatherproof because they are made using weathering steel, giving them heightened endurance to atmospheric corrosion, a needed trait because they are widely used on ocean-going vessels. The weatherproof steel works forming a protective anti-corrosion sheet on its surface thanks to the way the alloying elements that make up the steel are distributed.  The weathering steel used in storage containers also has the property to “regrow” its protective sheet.

Some of the damage steel storage containers sustain can come in fact, from its interior. The differentiation of internal and external temperature can cause humidity levels to reach a condensation build up that can damage items stored inside and even promote rust.  This damage can be subverted by using absorb poles that utilize salts to absorb moisture or by adding ventilation systems.   Both mechanisms do not disrupt in any way the storage container.

A relatively recent use of steel storage containers is as self-contained structures.  The fact that they were designed to support heavy loads have high strength and their basic square form that provides an effortless way of modular building.  The weatherproof condition of steel storage containers comes in handy giving them the ability to withstand hard environmental conditions.   This durability makes them ideal for use as mobile offices, emergency shelters, and even as houses.

Steel storage containers are widely known to be eco-friendly; their low cost of manufacture, durability, and strength makes them one of the most valuable assets in the shipping and containerization industry.
